When to Seek Endodontic Surgery
In most cases, a root canal treatment is sufficient to save a tooth with injured or infected pulp. However, there are instances where this non-surgical approach does not completely resolve the problem. In such cases, we may recommend coming to us for apicoectomy in Illinois or Indiana to preserve the tooth.
Surgical treatment may be necessary to:
- Locate fractures or hidden canals that do not appear on X-rays but continue to cause symptoms.
- Treat damaged root surfaces or surrounding bone.
- Remove persistent infection that has not resolved with prior treatment.
The most common type of endodontic surgery is an apicoectomy, also known as root-end resection.
About Apicoectomy
Here’s how it works:
- An incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the bone and the inflamed or infected tissue.
- The damaged tissue and the tip of the root are carefully removed.
- A small filling is placed at the root end to seal the canal and prevent reinfection.
- The gum is sutured, and the area is left to heal.
What to Expect After Surgery
It’s normal to experience mild discomfort or swelling as the incision site heals. This is typical of any minor surgical procedure. To manage any post-operative pain, your endodontist will recommend an appropriate pain medication.
If your discomfort persists or does not respond to medication, please contact our office immediately.
